Antioch Exterior
Our History
103 years

More than a century ago, seven people shared a common vision to worship together and provide a Sunday School for their children. Those seven people began worshiping in their homes in early 1919. The Antioch Baptist Church was then founded on May 11, 1919. Worship services were conducted at various rented facilities in southeast Canton, for many years.

In 1926 Antioch purchased its first building located on 9th Street NE. Under the pastorate of Wilburn M. Jackson, the location at 1103 7th Street NE was purchased in the late 1950's. Antioch has a rich heritage of Holy Spirit-led movements and innovation. Some of our innovative moves brought about discomfort and struggle to some members. Those members departed and founded two other area churches, The Jerusalem Baptist Church and Union Baptist Church in 1947 and 1956, respectively. Further changes and struggles within Jerusalem caused the birthing of another church, Greater Jerusalem Baptist Church, which later changed its' name and is now the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Antioch has been the matriarch of a powerful movement of the church in Canton for many years.

Following the death of Pastor Jackson in 1961, W.C. Henderson was called to pastor the church in 1962. The ministry grew under Pastor Henderson; the old facility was remodeled and new facilities built in 1977. The new facilities included a 500-seat sanctuary, classrooms, offices, restrooms, and storage. The 1990's brought about great transition with the retirement of Pastor Henderson, who served more than 31 years, and the calling of our current pastor, Richard L. Jordan in 1994.

Antioch seeks to make all their services and activities more inclusive for everyone. On November 15, 2009, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Antioch family occupied their new worship location at 1844 Ira Turpin Way NE. This modern edifice was fully contained on a single floor, including the restroom facilities, offices, meeting rooms and banquet facilities.

A few years later, the Lord led the congregation to an even better church home at 142 Arlington Ave. NW. This larger worship facility was acquired in December of 2021. It, too, is handicapped-accessible, with greater outreach potential via more classrooms, customary church amenities, gymnasium, and kitchen and dining facilities.

Years before the COVID pandemic, the Church had started reaching out to the global community by live streaming its services via Facebook in 2018. It continues that outreach today, along with even more expansion of its technology implementations.

Antioch represents many generations of families that are actively involved in its holistic ministry. Still, God has prepared us for continued ministry and continued increase, by changing and transitioning us for this future growth. We readily accept that charge because we are an exciting ministry, whose story is constantly being updated by the Hand of God. Antioch stays ready and on the move for Him!

What We Believe
  • There is one, and only one, living and true God, whose name is Jehovah, the Supreme Ruler of heaven and earth. In the unity of the Godhead there are three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. v (Isaiah 45:5; John 10:30; 14:8-10; I John 5:7)
  • The Holy Bible is the divinely inspired, infallible Word of God that reveals the principles by which God will judge mankind; and shall remain until the end of time. (Matthew 24:35; II Timothy 3:16; I Peter 1:25; II Peter 1:21)
  • All have sinned and are in need of salvation. (Romans 3:23; 5:12)
  • Salvation is wholly of grace through Jesus, who freely took upon Himself our sins; and by His death, made full atonement for us. (Hebrews 10:14; I Peter 2:24)
  • Justification includes the pardon of sin, and the promise of eternal life; it is not bestowed because of any works we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemer's blood. (Acts 13:38,39; Romans 3:24,25; 5:9-11; Ephesians 2:8,9)
  • In order to be saved, sinners must be regenerated (born again), and repentance and faith are sacred duties wrought in our souls by the regenerating Spirit of God. (John 3:3,5; Titus 3:5)
  • Sanctification is the process that separates us from our sin-man, and makes us partakers of God's holiness;it is a progressive work that is begun in regeneration. (II Corinthians 4:16; Hebrews 10:10; II Peter 3:18)
  • The Holy Spirit is the sovereign giver of spiritual gifts to the church, for the perfecting of the Saints, for the work of ministry and for the edifying of the Body of Christ. (I Corinthians 12:11,28; Ephesians 4:7-12; Hebrews 2:4)
  • The church is an assembly of "called-out", baptized believers, the chosen of God united by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the Gospel. The New Testament Church is revealed as the Body of Christ. (Matthew 16:18; Ephesians 5:25-27; Hebrews 10:25)
  • Baptism is the immersion of a believer in water, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; which symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection of the risen Savior, Jesus Christ. The Lord's Supper is the symbolic remembrance of the sacrificial death of Christ through the use of bread and wine. (Matthew 28:19; Matthew 26:26-28; I Corinthians 11:23-26)
  • God is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. Everything belongs to Him. He allows us to be recipients of His bountiful blessings. God only asks that we willingly and freely give back to Him a tithe (10%) of that which He has blessed us with. This not only means giving of our finances, but our time, talents, gifts, service and commitment. (Psalm 24:1; Ephesians 5:15,16; I Peter 4:10,11; Malachi 3:8-11; Luke 6:38)
  • in the last day, Christ will descend from heaven, and raise the dead from the grave to meet those still living in the air for final retribution; that a solemn separation will take place; that the wicked will be adjudged to endless punishment in hell, and the righteous to endless joy in heaven. (I Thessalonians 4:13-17; Revelation 20:11-15)
